The Psychological Evaluation Process

  • Initial meeting: The purpose of the initial meeting is to collect and review information provided by you and to discuss your reasons for seeking an evaluation.  You may be asked to provide previous evaluation reports, relevant medical records, school records and samples of schoolwork.  In addition, you will be asked to complete a detailed developmental and social history before the meeting. The components of the evaluation will be determined based on all of this information. During the meeting, Dr. Jaret will explain the entire evaluation process and will answer any of your questions.

  • Evaluation procedures: The evaluation will be designed to answer the specific referral questions and your concerns.  Procedures may include direct individual testing, review of medical, psychological and educational records, consultation with teachers, therapists, and other parties, behavior checklists, and observation. The evaluation may be conducted in your home or in Dr. Jaret's office.  Appointments are available on weekdays and on weekends. The number of sessions and the duration of those sessions is determined based on the age and abilities of the client, as well as the reason for referral. Typically, sessions are conducted in two to three hour blocks of time.

  • Report: Dr. Jaret will prepare a comprehensive written report within one month of the evaluation procedures.  This report will include the reasons for referral, relevant history, behavioral observations, a description of each test conducted, test results and interpretations, and recommendations.   Recommendations will include ways of supporting the client at school, at home and in the community.

  • Feedback meeting: Dr. Jaret will conduct a feedback meeting with the adult client, or in the case of a child evaluation, with the parent and, if appropriate, with the child. The purpose of the feedback meeting is to review the findings of the evaluation, to explain the written report, and to discuss recommendations. Referrals for follow-up evaluation and treatment will  be provided, as needed.  Dr. Jaret will agree to discuss the findings of this evaluation with other professionals only after receiving signed consent from the client or parent to do so.  Without such consent, the information gathered and the obtained results will be considered confidential.

  • Consultation:  Dr. Jaret will consult with school staff or other referring professionals with consent of the client as appropriate. This may include participation in a Committee on Special Education or 504 Committee meetings to interpret test findings and discuss implementation of curricular modification and/or accommodations.
